The latest campaign finance reports are out in the Los Angeles mayoral contest, and they show a clear gap in fundraising between the two leading candidates. Congresswoman Karen Bass brought in more than $510,000 in contributions during the most recent filing period. Her opponent, City Councilman Kevin Raman, reported just over $170,000 in donations.
That difference is significant, but it does not tell the whole story. Raman's campaign has pointed out that he still has a solid war chest from earlier in the race, and his team says the smaller number reflects a shift in strategy. They argue that Raman is focusing more on direct voter outreach and small-dollar donations rather than chasing big checks.
Bass, on the other hand, continues to pull support from a wide network of donors, including labor unions, business leaders, and entertainment industry figures. Her campaign says the strong showing is a sign of momentum and broad-based support across the city.
The reports also show how the money is being spent. Both campaigns have poured significant funds into advertising, field operations, and digital outreach. Bass has outspent Raman in recent weeks, particularly on television and mailers.
With the primary election just weeks away, the fundraising numbers could shape how each campaign finishes the race. Bass has the financial edge, but Raman has shown he can stretch a dollar. Voters will decide soon whether that matters.
