Brazil's Finance Minister Dario Durigan on Thursday rejected growing market excitement over the possibility of a Flavio Bolsonaro presidency, describing the enthusiasm as a "cheap, hollow illusion." His comments came after Brazilian assets rallied in response to the senator's stronger-than-expected showing in the first round of voting against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Speaking in an interview with CNN Brasil, Durigan said Bolsonaro's economic platform closely mirrors the approach of Argentina's President Javier Milei. He accused the proposal of prioritizing a rapid reduction in government spending without adequately considering the social and economic consequences for Brazil's most vulnerable populations.
The minister warned that such policies could undermine years of progress in reducing poverty and inequality. He argued that the rally in financial markets reflects short-term speculation rather than a realistic assessment of what a Bolsonaro administration would mean for the country's long-term stability.
Durigan also emphasized that the current government remains focused on responsible fiscal management while continuing to invest in social programs and sustainable growth. He called on voters to carefully examine the practical implications of opposing economic proposals before casting their ballots in the upcoming runoff.
The first-round results have intensified political debate across Brazil, with both camps preparing for a competitive second round.
