Democratic officials are asking a judge to remove a Republican candidate from the race for a state House seat, arguing that his incomplete financial disclosure form should bar him from appearing on the ballot.
The case centers on Jose Tagle, who is running for the state House. Campaign finance regulators previously recommended that Tagle be disqualified because his financial paperwork was not properly completed. Despite that recommendation, Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom allowed him to remain in the race.
Democrats argue that Dahlstrom overstepped her authority when she ignored the regulators' findings. They say the decision undermines the state's campaign finance rules and sets a troubling precedent for future elections.
Attorneys for the Democratic Party filed the request in court this week, asking a judge to order Tagle's name removed from the ballot before voters head to the polls. They contend that allowing a candidate with an incomplete filing to run makes a mockery of disclosure requirements meant to give voters full information about who is seeking office.
Tagle's campaign has not yet responded to the lawsuit. Supporters of the candidate say the filing errors were minor and should not cost him a spot on the ballot.
The judge is expected to hear arguments in the coming days. The outcome could affect the balance of power in the state House, where several seats are considered competitive this cycle.
