EQT’s EdgeConneX Weighs Up to $4 Billion of Debt Financing

EQT’s EdgeConneX Weighs Up to $4 Billion of Debt Financing

EQT-backed data center operator EdgeConneX is exploring a significant debt raise of as much as $4 billion to fund a major project in Texas, according to sources close to the situation. The move would mark one of the larger financing efforts in the sector this year, underscoring the relentless demand for computing capacity tied to artificial intelligence and cloud services.

The company, which specializes in edge data centers and large-scale hyperscale facilities, is reportedly in early discussions with lenders about the structure and terms of the financing. While the exact scope of the Texas buildout has not been disclosed, the size of the potential debt package suggests a multi-phase development with substantial power and cooling infrastructure. Industry observers note that land, grid connections, and construction costs in high-demand markets like Texas have surged, pushing developers to secure capital well ahead of tenant commitments.

EdgeConneX has expanded rapidly under EQT's ownership, which acquired a majority stake in 2020. The firm has since pursued a strategy of building both in secondary markets and near major internet hubs, often pre-leasing capacity to large tech companies. A deal of this scale would likely require a mix of bank loans, private credit, and possibly investment-grade bonds, depending on market conditions.

No final decisions have been made, and the financing could still be scaled back or delayed. Representatives for EdgeConneX and EQT declined to comment on the discussions. The news comes as data center operators across the United States compete for financing and power availability, with Texas emerging as a top destination due to its business climate and access to renewable energy.
