Financial Engineering Is Resembling Pre-Crisis Era, Pimco Warns

The rapid growth of complex credit instruments is starting to look a lot like the period just before the 2008 financial meltdown, according to a top executive at Pacific Investment Management Co. Dan Ivascyn, the firm's group chief investment officer, raised the alarm about the current state of financial engineering, saying it is increasingly resembling the pre-crisis era.

Ivascyn pointed to the explosion of private credit deals and the repackaging of risk into opaque structures as key warning signs. He noted that while the underlying assets today are often different from the subprime mortgages that triggered the last crash, the aggressive pursuit of yield is creating similar vulnerabilities. Investors are piling into these products without fully understanding the risks, he argued, driven by low interest rates and a hunger for returns.

The warning from Pimco, one of the world's largest bond investors, carries weight given the firm's history. Ivascyn stressed that the financial system is not necessarily heading for a repeat of 2008, but the dynamics are troubling. He urged investors to be cautious and to demand more transparency in these markets. The buildup, he said, is a classic pattern of risk being mispriced and hidden, which often ends badly.
