Is IBM Stock's Upside Built On Growth It Is Not Guiding To?

International Business Machines (IBM) stock dropped 12 percent over the past twelve months, while the S&P 500 climbed 16.5 percent. That gap tells a story of a company struggling to keep pace with a broader market rally. The simple conclusion might be that all the bad news is already reflected in the share price. But that view deserves closer scrutiny.

Management pointed to its second quarter of 2026 results, which missed expectations. The main culprit was a wave of delayed large deals. Clients shifted budgets toward servers, storage and memory instead of committing to longer term contracts. That kind of spending shift can hurt a company built on enterprise software and services.

So what could IBM realistically return over three years? The answer depends on several factors. First, whether those delayed deals eventually close or disappear entirely. Second, whether IBM can grow its hybrid cloud and AI consulting work faster than legacy segments decline. Third, whether margins hold up as hardware demand fluctuates.

Without formal growth guidance from the company, investors are left to guess. The upside case rests on deal flow recovering and new products gaining traction. The downside case is that clients keep prioritizing short term hardware needs over IBM's higher value offerings. For now, the stock reflects caution. Whether that caution is overdone remains an open question.
