Kansas college pauses golf programs, citing financial challenges

Fort Hays State University has announced it will pause both its men's and women's golf programs, citing ongoing financial difficulties. The decision comes just weeks after Wichita State University made a similar move, suspending its own golf teams last month.

University officials said the pause is necessary to redirect limited resources toward other athletic and academic priorities. The golf programs will not operate for the upcoming season, and the school did not provide a timeline for their potential return. Student-athletes currently on the roster will be allowed to transfer without penalty or explore other options within the university.

The move highlights a growing trend among mid-sized Kansas universities struggling to maintain full athletic rosters amid rising costs and enrollment pressures. Fort Hays State, a Division II school, has seen its athletic budget squeezed in recent years, and the golf programs were identified as particularly expensive relative to their size and competitive impact.

Coaches and players expressed disappointment but acknowledged the financial reality. Some athletes are already looking at other schools to continue their golf careers. The university said it remains committed to supporting affected students through the transition.
