LATAM Airlines Group reported second-quarter 2026 earnings that stayed in positive territory, even as management pointed to one of the sharpest recent jumps in jet fuel costs. Chief Executive Officer Roberto Alvo said the total impact from higher fuel prices exceeded $200 million during the quarter, a figure that weighed heavily on margins but did not push the carrier into a loss.
The company credited strong passenger demand across its domestic and international routes, along with disciplined capacity management, for offsetting much of the fuel burden. Cargo revenue also provided a buffer, though it softened compared to the same period last year. Alvo noted that the airline's focus on operational efficiency and its diversified route network helped cushion the blow.
Looking ahead, LATAM said it would continue to monitor fuel price movements and adjust its hedging strategy accordingly. The executive team expressed cautious optimism about the second half of the year, citing resilient travel demand and stable booking trends. However, they acknowledged that if fuel prices remain at current levels, further cost controls or fare adjustments may be necessary.
The earnings call also touched on fleet modernization plans, with several new aircraft deliveries expected in the coming months. These additions are aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing overall operating costs. Analysts on the call pressed for more detail on how the airline plans to maintain profitability in a volatile cost environment, and management reiterated its commitment to flexibility in scheduling and pricing.
