Nvidia has announced it expects to generate $20 billion in CPU sales this year, marking a major push into a processor market the company values at $200 billion. The chipmaker, long known for its graphics processing units and AI accelerators, is now positioning its Grace CPU as a serious contender in data centers and high-performance computing.
During a recent financial briefing, Nvidia executives outlined their strategy to capture a significant share of the central processor market, which has been dominated by Intel and AMD for decades. The company's Grace CPU, built on Arm architecture, is designed to work alongside Nvidia's own GPUs in systems handling AI training, scientific simulations, and cloud workloads.
Industry analysts note that Nvidia's entry into the CPU space comes at a time when demand for specialized computing is surging. Traditional server CPUs are being supplemented by accelerators, and Nvidia's ability to offer a complete system-on-a-chip solution could give it an edge. The company claims its Grace CPU offers superior energy efficiency and memory bandwidth compared to x86 competitors.
Nvidia's projection of $20 billion in CPU sales this year represents a bold claim, as it would instantly make the company one of the largest CPU vendors globally. However, some analysts caution that the figure may include sales of integrated systems where the CPU is bundled with other components. The company has not broken down how much of that revenue comes from standalone CPU sales versus complete server modules. Despite the questions, the announcement signals Nvidia's intent to challenge the established order in the processor industry.
