Nearly 80 percent of baby boomers own their own homes according to the US Census Bureau. Of those senior homeowners, over 70 percent own their house free and clear with no mortgage. Years of hard work and diligence have paid off in time to enjoy a comfortable retirement in familiar surroundings.
This financial stability gives older Americans a strong position as they plan for later life. Many have built equity that can support aging in place, whether through home modifications, in home care, or simply staying in a community they know well. The desire to remain at home is not only about money. It reflects deep ties to neighbors, routines, and memories that a new location cannot easily replace.
At the same time, staying home can bring challenges. Health needs may change, and some homes were not designed for limited mobility. Families often face difficult talks about safety, transportation, and access to medical services. Still, for a large share of older adults, the goal is clear. They want to keep living in the house they worked so hard to own, and many are in a financial position to make that choice possible.
