A growing number of homeowners say financial stress is interfering with their sleep, according to new survey data. The findings point to a widening gap between the pressure of everyday debt and the determination to keep housing payments current.
The survey found that 51 percent of homeowners carry credit card debt from one month to the next. Even with those balances lingering, 90 percent said they prioritize their mortgage payment above other financial obligations. That gap between what people owe and what they choose to pay first is creating tension in household budgets across the country.
For many families, the mortgage remains the last bill they would let slip. The consequences of missing a housing payment are immediate and severe, while credit card balances can be managed with minimum payments, at least in the short term. That strategy keeps roofs over heads, but it also allows high-interest debt to compound quietly in the background.
The result is a cycle that is hard to break. Homeowners lie awake running numbers, weighing which obligation gets paid and which one waits. Financial advisers say the pattern is common when incomes have not kept pace with the cost of living. They recommend tackling the highest-interest balances first, building even a small emergency fund, and contacting lenders before a payment is missed rather than after.
The survey offers a clear snapshot of how many households are managing to stay current on housing while carrying debt that never quite goes away.
