SolarEdge Says US Home Solar Market Weak Due to Financing Issues

SolarEdge Technologies chief executive Shuki Nir says the US residential solar market is struggling less from a lack of homeowner interest and more from a breakdown in how projects get funded. Speaking to analysts, Nir explained that uncertainty around new federal tax credit rules for home solar equipment has made it harder for installers and third-party financiers to secure the capital needed to put panels on rooftops.

That financing squeeze, in turn, has softened customer demand. Even households that want solar are finding fewer lease or loan options available, or facing higher monthly payments than they expected. Nir described the current environment as one where the underlying appetite for solar remains intact, but the machinery that turns that appetite into installed systems is stalling.

The comments come as the broader industry watches how the Inflation Reduction Act's clean energy incentives are being implemented. While the law extended a 30 percent investment tax credit for residential solar, the Treasury Department has yet to finalize some key guidance on what equipment qualifies and how adders for domestic content or low-income communities apply. That ambiguity has made lenders cautious, since they cannot reliably model the value of tax benefits over the life of a system.

SolarEdge, which makes inverters and power optimizers, has felt the slowdown directly. The company has cut its revenue outlook for the current quarter and reduced its workforce in response to weaker orders from US installers. Nir said he expects the market to recover once the tax rules are clarified, but he did not offer a timeline. For now, he said, the industry is in a waiting pattern, with financing conditions acting as the main brake on growth.
