State regulators voice questions and support as Brattleboro hospital aims to revive its ailing finances

A Vermont regulator voiced sharp criticism Friday while also signaling cautious support for Brattleboro Memorial Hospital's efforts to stabilize its troubled finances. During a meeting of the Green Mountain Care Board, one member said the community is now paying the price for past leadership failures.

"I do think the Brattleboro community is suffering the consequences of mismanagement," the board member said, responding to a detailed presentation from hospital administrators. The hospital has been working to address a series of financial and operational problems that came to light over the past several months, including billing errors, staffing shortages, and a significant budget shortfall.

Hospital officials laid out a multi-step plan to regain solvency. That plan includes tighter spending controls, renegotiated contracts with vendors, and a renewed focus on outpatient services that generate steadier revenue. They also promised more transparent reporting to the board on a quarterly basis.

Other board members struck a more supportive tone, acknowledging that the hospital serves a vital role in a rural region where options for care are already limited. They stressed that the goal is not to punish the institution but to ensure it can continue operating for years to come. The board did not vote on the plan, but asked for follow-up data within 60 days. Hospital leaders said they are committed to rebuilding trust with both regulators and the local community.
