Congressional Joint Economic Committee Pegs Medicare Advantage Overpayments at $7 Billion Annually and Rising

A new analysis from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee has found that Medicare Advantage plans are being overpaid by roughly $212 per enrollee. That number might seem modest on its own, but when applied to the nearly 33 million people currently enrolled in the program, it adds up to about $7 billion in excess payments to private insurers every year.

The committee's findings point to a growing financial leak in the Medicare system. Medicare Advantage, which is the private insurance alternative to traditional Medicare, has been expanding rapidly in recent years. As enrollment climbs, so do the overpayments. The report suggests the problem is not static either. The gap between what the government pays private insurers and what it would cost to cover those same people under traditional Medicare is getting wider.

Critics of the current payment model argue that the extra money does not always translate into better care for seniors. Instead, some of it flows back to insurers in the form of higher profits and administrative costs. Lawmakers on the committee are now calling for reforms to bring payments more in line with actual costs. Without changes, the annual overpayment figure is expected to keep rising as more beneficiaries choose private plans over the government-run program.
