Crystal City Independent School District is eliminating 72 staff positions, representing roughly one-quarter of its workforce, as part of an emergency plan to stave off what officials describe as an imminent financial collapse. The layoffs were announced in a letter posted by the district, which cited severe budget shortfalls that have been building for years.
The cuts affect teachers, support staff, and administrative personnel across the district's schools. District leaders said the decision was unavoidable after state funding failed to keep pace with rising costs, including inflation, increased utility bills, and mandated salary increases. Enrollment declines have also reduced the per-student funding the district receives from the state.
In the letter, officials acknowledged the painful impact on employees and the community but stressed that without these reductions, the district would face insolvency within months. The district plans to consolidate some programs and restructure operations to maintain core academic services with fewer staff.
Parents and community members have expressed frustration and concern about larger class sizes and the loss of specialized programs. Some have questioned whether the district explored all alternatives before resorting to such deep cuts. The school board is expected to hold a public meeting in the coming weeks to discuss the district's financial recovery plan and answer questions from residents.
Crystal City ISD now joins a growing number of Texas school districts grappling with similar financial crises as state funding formulas remain unchanged despite rising operational costs.
