A corner lot might look like a win when pulling up to the curb. Personal finance expert Dave Ramsey says buyers should look past the front yard before calling it one. On "The Ramsey Show," the exchange started with co-host George Kamel highlighting a common trade-off. These properties often "present well from the street," creating an impressive first impression for visitors and potential future buyers.
However, Ramsey was quick to point out the significant downside. "You have no freaking backyard," he stated plainly. The unique shape of many corner lots, often resulting in just a small side or triangular space, severely limits usable private outdoor area. This can be a major drawback for families with children, pet owners, or anyone who envisions a private retreat for grilling, gardening, or relaxation.
The experts noted that corner lots typically come with higher costs for fencing due to increased frontage. They also mentioned the potential for more noise, light pollution, and foot traffic from two streets instead of one. While the visibility can be advantageous, Ramsey's team advises buyers to carefully weigh their lifestyle needs. For those who prioritize a spacious, secluded backyard for entertaining or play, a traditional interior lot may provide far more value and utility despite a less prominent street presence.
