Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Nissan Motor are reportedly nearing a deal to work together on vehicle software and onboard computer systems. According to Japan's Nikkei newspaper, an agreement could be announced as soon as the coming Monday. The two automakers are said to be focusing on a shared operating system and related hardware for future models, with the first vehicles using this technology expected to hit the market around 2029.
This potential partnership is seen as a major step for both companies as they try to catch up in the race toward software-defined vehicles. Automakers worldwide are shifting their focus from purely mechanical engineering to digital features, including over-the-air updates, advanced driver assistance, and connected services. By pooling resources, Honda and Nissan hope to cut development costs and speed up the rollout of new technology.
The news comes at a time when Japanese carmakers face growing pressure from newer competitors, especially in the electric vehicle segment. Companies like Tesla and various Chinese brands have built their reputations on strong software platforms. A joint effort between Honda and Nissan could help them compete more effectively without each company having to build everything from scratch.
Neither Honda nor Nissan has officially confirmed the report yet. However, industry watchers say such an alliance makes sense given the high cost of developing next-generation automotive software. If the deal goes through, it could reshape how these two major players approach their future lineups and set the stage for deeper collaboration down the road.
