There is no denying that SpaceX has become a cultural and industrial phenomenon. Every launch feels like a national event, and the company's valuation keeps climbing to numbers that would have seemed absurd a decade ago. For many investors, the idea of owning a piece of that rocket-fueled growth sounds like a no-brainer. But after looking at the actual situation, I have decided to ignore the stock entirely, and I think more people should at least pause before jumping in.
The biggest problem is that SpaceX is not a public company in the traditional sense. You cannot just open a brokerage account and buy shares. What you are actually looking at, when you see a ticker like SPCX, is likely a fund or a trust that holds private shares. These vehicles often come with heavy fees, limited liquidity, and a price that does not always reflect the real market value. You might think you are getting a piece of the next moon landing, but you are really getting a complicated financial product with a lot of middlemen taking a cut.
Even if you could buy the real thing, the valuation is already pricing in decades of perfect execution. The company is profitable in some areas, but it still spends enormous amounts on Starship development, Starlink expansion, and Mars ambitions. Those are exciting projects, but they are also money pits that may not pay off for a very long time. Meanwhile, competitors are catching up in satellite internet, and the regulatory environment for launches is getting more crowded.
There are solid reasons to buy, sure. The technology lead is real, and the launch monopoly for certain payloads is impressive. But for the average investor, the risk of overpaying for a private asset through a backdoor fund is too high. I would rather wait for a real IPO with clear financials and a reasonable price. Until then, I am happy to watch the rockets from the ground and keep my money somewhere I actually understand.
