Union Pacific reported stronger-than-expected financial results for the second quarter, prompting the railroad operator to raise its full-year outlook. The company posted record revenue and earnings, driven by higher shipping volumes and improved operational efficiency.
Net income rose to $1.7 billion, or $2.74 per share, up from $1.5 billion, or $2.45 per share, in the same period last year. Revenue climbed 8% to $6.1 billion, beating analyst estimates. The railroad cited strong demand for consumer goods, agricultural products, and industrial materials as key factors.
Union Pacific now expects full-year earnings per share to grow by a high-single-digit percentage, up from its previous forecast of mid-single-digit growth. The company also plans to invest more in network upgrades and technology to handle rising freight volumes.
Chief Executive Lance Fritz said the results reflect the company's focus on service reliability and cost control. He noted that Union Pacific is working to reduce delays and improve train speed, which has helped attract more business from customers.
The positive report comes as the broader freight industry faces mixed conditions. While some carriers struggle with weak demand, Union Pacific has benefited from its strong position in the energy and agricultural sectors. The company's stock rose more than 3% in after-hours trading following the announcement.
